What is Paronychia? 

Paronychia is a nail inflammation that may result from irritation or infection. It can occur when bacteria invade the broken skin near the cuticle and nail fold, causing an infection. Germs and bacteria tend to cause sudden-onset (acute) paronychia which is painful. Yeast and molds also can cause nail infections. As the nail ages, it can become brittle and dry.
